“Surfin'” (feat. Pharrell) by Kid Cudi

Released just this week amongst the news that Kid Cudi (thankfully) checked himself into rehab due to depression and suicidal urges, it is ironically one of the most upbeat tracks to come from Cudi in a long while. With its triumphant horns and groove laden baseline, the beginning sounds something closer to what you’d find on a drumline than the introspective and darker elements you’d usually hear. Celebrating his uniqueness, Cudi seems to be underscoring the complaints he was making last month about the lack of loyalty and the bandwagon nature of hip-hop music (sights mainly set on Kanye and Drake). The result is a spirited track, and one that makes the anticipation for his upcoming album Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’ all the greater.
