No. 22 – Oxymoron by Schoolboy Q
As part of the TDE Black Hippy family alongside noted hip-hop artists Ab-Soul, Jay Rock and Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q represents the darker side of the collective. His music thrives in a much grittier element than what you would usually hear from his contemporaries, making for a more direct listening experience. It’s a sensible balance in the grand scheme of things, but some of the material on Oxymoron can be deeply personal and read almost like a pulp-laden diary entry. Even so, when it all clicks, it makes for some of the more addicting and enjoyable hip-hop of 2014.
